Crazy Leftist Antifa Discovers Watain is NSBM
People still think Watain is relevant in the current year...? How? Why? But most of all, why the accusations of NSBM ties NOW of all time? Let's find out...
How do you attract so much attention in high places but none in low, in such a short amount of time? This is a saying particularly fitting for Watain, probably the most astroturfed band in the history of black metal music (honorable mentions go to Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Dark Funeral and Liturgy of course).
Well anyway, this is some reddit-type SJW discovering a “conspiracy” based on Watain and it’s front “man” Erik Danielsson going on “migrant hunts” or some other bullshit. In case you missed all the Watain drama, I highly recommend you read this post.
Antifa: Unrelated, but I also came to the conclusion that Watain is either a continuation of, or the spiritual successor of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order/Temple of the Black Light (NSBM), if anyone is interested in hearing about that lol
Definitely piqued my interest!
Its a bit of a wild ride, so bear with me.
I only started listening to black metal towards the end of 2019 and I never really looked into Watain when I started listening to them because they really are one of bands that everyone points to as being NSBM-adjacent/generally sketchy. But after finding a few bands that were new to me that ended up being sketchy, I figured I would look into Watain just in case. My initial search pulled up the incidents where one of their live guitarists, Set from Dissection, gave a couple nazi salutes, praised Hitler in some interviews, but they dropped him after people - the press, mostly - got upset about it, so kind of iffy, probably still ok.
I kept searching and found an article detailing how in 2019 their guitarist and founding member Pelle Forsberg got barred from entering the US for 5 years after border/customs officers pulled him aside and looked through his phone. They apparently didn't like photos they found which were related to “motorbikes, hunting and various things related to Satanism, far-right politics, black metal and counter culture in general.” Pelle also released a statement about it, describing the pictures as “...riding [motor]bikes with friends, me chopping heads off road kill, welding weird things that look ‘frightening’...” I noticed that a decent amount of their merch has a motorcycle club(gang) feel to it, so I decided to look into Swedens far-right gangs, since gang affiliation is grounds for being denied a visa/having it revoked.
One gang that got my attention was the Atomwaffen SS/Werewolf Legion, since wolves are a theme for Watain. There were pictures of tattoos of the werewolf legion logo (basically NatSoc paraphernalia), which is a buff werewolf, and the head of that werewolf looks EXTREMELY similar to the wolf’s head in a circle of flame that Watain uses as a logo. A particular picture of the werewolf legion tattoo was on the arm of the vocalist for Dissection, Jon Nödtveidt, who is (was) a known hardcore Nazi advocate.

Jon Nödtveidt was a member of the MLO. The MLO was a legitimate odalist aryan satanic cult founded in 1995 that preformed ritual sacrifices, and later on they changed their name to The Temple of the Black Light. In case you're not familiar with Jon (I was not), he was arrested and sent to prison for being an accessory to murder in 1997 - the murder of a homosexual Algerian immigrant, you can look it up - along with the murder, Vlad, another member of the MLO. In 1998, Watain released their first demo. After Jon was released from prison in 2004 he restarted Dissection. The vocalist for Watain, Erik Danielsson, played bass for Dissection during their live shows during this time. Jon took his own life in 2006 in a ritual suicide, surrounded by lit candles and with a copy of Mein Kampff and the Liber Azerate, a grimoire written by the MLO's founder. On the anniversary of Jon's death in 2018, Watain posted a picture of him on their Instagram with the text “Today and every day let us remember and pay our respects to Jon Nödtveidt and his mighty legacy.”
Obviously they were close to Jon. My theory is that Watain was related to Jon initially through the Nazi gang, the Werewolf Legion, and later became members of, or at least partial to, the MLO. In an 2012 interview with Erik, when asked “Have you personally got any affiliations with the MLO (Misanthropic Luciferian Order)?” Erik replied “They are the only Satanic organization that I fully support.”
If all of the information I have found is true, then I believe that when Jon went to prison in 1997, the founding members of Watain created the band as a continuation of the MLO, since at the time of their arrests, Jon and Vlad (plus Vlad's girlfriend) were supposedly the only remaining members of the MLO. I also believe that “cutting the heads off roadkill” was just an “excuse,” a code word if you will, for Pelle preforming a ritual human sacrifice (migrant hunting, as they call it). Also, Watain is known for dousing the crowd with “animal” blood, occasionally throwing corpses into the crowd, and they are covered in blood during all of their performances.
Additionally, Watain has a song titled “Legions of the Black Light,” and their primary logo is the trident with a small upside down cross on the bottom (legitimate Third Reich symbolism), which is always on stage during their shows, always set on fire. In the MLO, their beliefs state that there are “three dark veils before Satan”: chaos, aryanism, and darkness; and that “These three powers can be seen as the burning trident held high above the Thaumielitan.”
Watain likes to call their shows “rituals” and they refer to themselves as “The Reich of Watain.” I know I might be reaching pretty hard to come to this conclusion, but it all seems to fit together. And if I’m right, and Watain actually believes all the Nazi shit that the MLO taught, and actually sees their live performances as true “National Sanatic” rituals that they are involving the audience in, including “animal” (read: sub-human, ie non white) sacrifice, then I’m not sure if I can continue supporting them.
Of course, I could be entirely wrong, I don’t really know for sure.
…
So, are “left-wing” metal fans retarded or what?
