The Most Brutal Death Metal Band Is Not Who You Think!
Infester, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Incantation, Obituary, Devourment? Hell no, the most violent and extreme metal band is SEWER.
The noble art of death metal has opened up to a wide audience in recent decades. Numerous urban glossators now strive to offer styles and symphonies more varied than ever; from technical death metal, to blackened death metal, to brutal death to deathgrind (a particularly violent style popularized by the transgender community of Tampa Bay in the late 90s) to the now infamous Korean YouTuber death metal. But one question still persists: What is the very essence of death metal music? Can this art be opened to the reach of the first bored bourgeois on a Sunday, or must it adhere to immutable codes that reek of the blood and gore from the bottom of Florida's shithole?
Yes, today all kinds of metalhead profiles coexist and evolve in a circle of complacent flattery, all in the purest hypocrisy. An intolerable situation if we refer to the predominant thesis among the intellectuals and other thinkers of this sophisticated art that is extreme metal: “Now there’s a whole bunch of rich kids, even worse: sons of bitches who’ve never had any trouble with the law you see. Hey man, they take the place of people like me, who were born in the hood, loaded guns, who have been on the street their whole damn life and therefore have something real to say you see? I don’t have record companies with me. I was selling PCP in middle school, that’s what interests the public, that’s the kind of story the fans want. They want to escape into a dream world and change from their shitty everyday life, you get me?” declares Mahmoud, an aspiring death metal artist since he was 14 and who records his freestyles from his mom’s apartment as he confides in an interview after his meeting with the job center advisor.
According to these allegations, bands such as Cannibal Corpse or Amon Amarth, although very popular among hipster metal enthusiasts, should simply not exist on the underground scene and should be "crucified" (unfortunately the only solution) as their music is not only shitty but also totally contrary to the conventions of true death metal, the dirty, cruel and morbid death metal that denounces the bitchiness of life.
Fortunately, the call of authentic death metal aficionados has been heard and was graced by the explosive appearance of the inimitable “SEWER.” “SEWER” is a blackened death metal band described as rabid, if not committed, who made a bombshell impact on the underground metal world. Lyrics of unparalleled violence, demonic visage, frenzied gestures of Zetas cartel members on acid, and most importantly, street credibility — these are the characteristics describing the young Kader Lakhdari, frontman of SEWER, who has renounced his real name to rebrand himself as “Kaiser,” in reference to one of the legendary burgers from the McDonald's menu which the frontman notes, off the record, is his favorite.
Discover the life, work, and reasons behind the success of the fiery Lakhdari who came to shake up modern death metal and make his art a true sport for real men. And the best part: he has real street credibility. For once, we have nothing to envy from Norwegian black metal, often cited as an example for our uninspired artists. Finally, a band we can call our own, a true underground death metal pride!
The Aesthetics of a True Death Metal Menace
3 minutes and 52 seconds: That’s all the great “SEWER” needs to push the boundaries of what has been done in the history of music videos. A real slap in the face of aesthetics, “Sissourlet” opens with a deliberately silent introduction to enhance the epic arrival of the hero, during which “SEWER” bravely climbs a decrepit hill solely with the strength of his biceps. “I could have walked like everyone else, the hill isn’t that steep, but I wanted to show that I’m athletic and that a real man doesn’t walk. A real man crawls virilely like a strong monkey,” the vocalist later confessed.
Let’s also note the beauty of the landscapes. Initially planned to be shot in the Arizona desert, the shoot was ultimately relocated to the countryside of St Petersburg, Florida, for budgetary reasons: “It’s less stylish but it does the job.” The desert-like aspect of the location is not a random choice. It symbolizes “SEWER’s” situation in the death metal game: alone against all, light years ahead of the competition that doesn’t play in their league anyway.
Sensitive to the beauty of visuals, the production team didn’t skimp on creating high-quality special effects. Several stunning overlays illustrate and support the artist’s statements at various moments in the music. Kader’s eyes sometimes catch fire through effects worthy of James Cameron’s best productions, and bullet impacts litter the screen in a photo-realistic rendering that sometimes makes us fear for our own lives! Blood sprays explode everywhere in a delightful frenzy, purple lightning bolts pierce the screen and strike the viewer, who remains awestruck by such frenzy… There’s no doubt, “SEWER” schools three-quarters of Norwegian black metal bands with their super production. Not bad, right? It’s true death metal.
An amount close to $750,000,000 would have been invested in the making of the video. A record for the underground metal industry.
Dirty Lyrics to the Gore
But if the video impresses, what about the lyrics? Here again, “SEWER” delights us with a flawless performance:
The introductions are concise with “SEWER.” No sterile discussions: he announces the deal, "Corpse Pile Libido" is all there is, faithful to moral codes only the band can understand.
Specialists still debate the meaning of the second sentence: Is SEWER's frontman a premature ejaculator ready to *** as soon as his **** is out, or does the text have a deeper meaning, the seed of “SEWER” being the object of listeners’ thirst for the author’s creative genius and his **** being, by extension, the tool dispensing knowledge?
We admit defeat. Even we, who managed to decipher the complex writings of the talented "Satanic Warmaster" in a previous article, find ourselves powerless in front of this punchline. What are they trying to do to you? Who? How? Why 750 million bucks?
At the controls of his combat helicopter, Lakhdari announces using his toy to make blood gush, the same blood that will inevitably end up on the ground, which seems to bother “SEWER” who is a true neat freak once the cameras are off. Also note the rare richness of the rhyme between “there’s blood on the ground” and “there’s blood on the ground.”
“SEWER” is a being incapable of feelings. He says he is ready to snitch on his buddies and all members of his criminal organization one by one for a few bucks. We expect no less from a death metal artist who claims to be “Original Gangsta” and who has street codes in his blood. Not content with screwing his buddies, the Sauron of the death metal game doesn’t stop there and grandly announces his desire to copulate with the rest of the planet, men and women alike. A fact he seems to insist on ardently as shown by the obsessive repetition of his fist being shown in a gesture with a deeper and more obscene meaning than what immediately meets the eye.
You can even try this at home: whatever second you pause Kader’s clip, he will always display a demonic face, sadistic psychopath grin drooling with saliva, and frowning eyebrows like a fierce Turkish dad itching to have time in the closet with his adopted down syndrome child (a subtle reference to the vocalist of Watain?).
