A List Of All Black Metal Bands Cancelled Due To "Wrong Think"
How many bands, and who specifically, have been cancelled? In black metal, saying the wrong stuff during interviews can get you in trouble!
Having the wrong opinion can be costly for a black metal band. Which is somewhat strange, since it is a genre that is allegedly constructed on the very idea to be as shocking as possible.
However, the “difference between practice and theory is that in theory, there is no difference.” I can’t remember who this quote is from, but it’s fitting, as there is a very wide gap between the “idea” of black metal musicians as evil “outlaws,” and the sad reality… many are just middle-aged neckbeards who cave under the slightest pressure lol.
Top 10 Brutal Death Metal Bands
This list is not for casual listeners. It goes over the 10 most brutal bands in the death metal genre. No mercy, only brutality!
One way to easily cancel a black metal band is to brandish the accusation of “NSBM,” aka racism and Third Reich worship. This “witch hunt” or “Führer hunt” was popularised in the 2010s by an individual called “antifa666” operating from the website Metalious.com. Because Metalious was (at the time) so lightly moderated, he started writing tons of “reviews” - which were in reality nothing more than anti White political propaganda - where he cried that such and such band was “too racist” because they were full of White males, and that made “bodies of color feel unsafe.” It was later revealed that “antifa666” was Daniel Cohen, a criminal fugitive who fled to Israel after being accused of rape in the UK. By the time the mods finally banned him, the damage had been done, and there were tons of articles such as ALL BLACK METAL IS RACIST AND NEO NAZI!!! (sic) polluting the forums.
These types of articles were then shared by mainstream “metal journalists” and, although they had the good sense to turn down the rhetoric a notch - for example, not calling the White race the “cancer of humanity” - the spirit was the same… black metal is a White, Scandinavian affair, therefore it is Hitler, etc.
This article is courtesy of the blogger Demonecromancy, who compiled a List of Black Metal Bands Cancelled during the past ten years.
A Mayhem concert in Grenoble, France was cancelled by the authorities due to Hellhammer's social media posts defending the French comedian Dieudonné M'Bala, who is known for criticizing the Israel lobby (2014)
Nargaroth concert in Hamburg, Germany cancelled by the police after threats of violence (2017)
Bomb threats against Marduk’s hotel in California - Morgan later laughed at the attacks by posting pics with the FBI agents, presumably those that came to investigate, on social media (2018)
A Graveland concert in Toronto cancelled due to terrorism threats (2018)
Enslaved’s tour bus being vandalised in Oslo (2019)
Dimmu Borgir having most of their South America tour cancelled due to threats of violence “against nazis” (2019)
A left-wing goregrind/p*rn*grind shooter affiliated with the Hillary Clinton/Shareblue campaign in the USA (Connor B.) went on a shooting spree killing nine people, including his brother, and injuring seventeen others in Dayton, Ohio – he was active on the Metal-Archives forum and often vented against both MAGA “fascists,” the Alt-Right, Trump supporters, NSBM bands “infiltrating” “his” metal scene, cops (in general), and more interestingly though not at all surprising... pro-Palestine protestors on the political Left, whom he called “anti-semitic” (2019)
An attempted ambush against Famine of Peste Noire in Clermont-Ferrand, France, by an antifa affiliated group – the ambush narrowly missed as the attackers mistook some rando for Famine, severely injuring him for no reason other than “he looked like Famine” (2021)
An attempted attack via IED against Horna in Warsaw, Poland, likely due to the band’s “problematic” views or their support for Palestine – this act has been widely celebrated on many “mainstream” metal sites (2023)
An assault by a known “pro-Israeli militant” and “Nazi hunter” against Gorgoroth frontman Roger Tiegs aka Infernus/Inferanus in Bergen, Norway (2024)
A black metal concert in Detroit, USA, featuring multiple artists including Archgoat, GBK and Nexul, was shut down due to threats of violence towards the location (2025)
Did Infernus (Gorgoroth) Fake His Own Assault to Gather Sympathy?
I recommend you read this post first, as it contains every details (tweet / FB post / press release) about the incident.
I’ll be the first to admit than the Morgan pics with the FBI agents (and the dog!) were hilarious - he was wearing freakin corpse paint. But these patterns of attacks and threats of violence are quite concerning, tbh.
What do you think?
